North-Central, Eastern, Sabaragamuwa Provincial Councils dissolved

The government yesterday dissolved the North Central, Eastern and Sabaragamuwa Provincial Councils with effect from midnight.  Deputy government printer L. R. C. Amerasinghe told The Island yesterday that the gazette notification was on its way as this edition went to press.

The gazette notification in relation to the dissolution of the three Councils were signed by NCP Governor Karunaratne Divulgane, Sabaragamuwa Governor W. J. M. Lokubandara and Eastern Province Governor Rear Admiral (retd) Mohan Wijewickrema at Presidential Secretariat yesterday morning, Presidential Secretariat sources told The Island.

Official sources said that the elections to the three Provincial Councils would be held within the first ten days of September, 2012. The three Provincial Councils had been dissolved by the governors before their terms came to an end.

Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya will shortly announce the date of elections and the closing date of nominations to the three Provincial Councils.

The Elections Commissioner is scheduled to summon all district election officers to Colombo today for a meeting at his Rajagiriya office to discuss the holding of the elections to the three Provincial Councils and the distribution of the new electoral register for 2011.
