The proposed visit by the Indian delegation to Sri Lanka might not bring expected results if the MPs fail to meet the affected Tamils and leaders of Tamil community in Sri Lanka, said Bharatiya Janata Party leader L. Ganesan.
Speaking to reporters here on Sunday he said the visit should not be a “conducted tour” as it would have no use. There were reports that each and every movement of Tamils was being closed followed by security agencies and intelligence personnel in the affected areas of Sri Lanka. It meant that it was not easy for them to express their sufferings and problems openly. Hence, the delegation at least must be able to visit the affected Tamils and meet those well versed with the problems and issues faced by affected Tamils in Sri Lanka.
Mr. Ganesan said out of 50,000 houses for displaced Tamils funded by India it was said just 1, 500 were completed by the Sri Lankan Government. BJP leaders from Tamil Nadu have met the leader of the Opposition Sushma Swaraj, who heads the Indian delegation to Sri Lanka, to apprise the sentiments of Tamils in connection with the visit, he added.
Detailing the recent incidents of murders, robberies and abductions, he said the law and order situation in Tamil Nadu was a matter of concern to the people. However, it could not be stated that the law and order had completely broken down but the government should take steps to create a safe atmosphere in the State.
