The Thamil Makkal Viduthalai Pullikal (TMVP) maintains that police powers must be allocated to the provinces and not remain in the hands of the central government. TMVP spokesman Azad Maulana told The Sunday Leader that his party wants to see the implementation of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution.
Under the 13th Amendment the devolution of powers to the provinces takes center stage and the TMVP feels that the provincial administration must have authority over the police in the area.
“Even if the government is unable to immediately devolve police powers there should be some sort of authority given to the provinces over the police. But our stand on police powers remains unchanged,” Maulana said.
He said that among the short term changes that can take place is the Chief Minister of each province being consulted when making top level appointments or changes to police officers in the area.
Moulana also said that police officers appointed to the traffic division in the province must also be from the province itself and not from outside.
Asked about the ongoing UN Human Rights Council session in Geneva, Moulana said that his party is firmly against any outside intervention in Sri Lanka.
He said the TMVP is still supportive of the government and its efforts to address the ethnic issue and feel there is no need for an international investigation in Sri Lanka. (ER
